Media Statement
11 November 2020
Issued by the office of the SACC General Secretary, Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana.
As the South African Council of Churches (SACC) we are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of the Auditor-General, Mr Kimi Makwetu. He was a model of humble excellence; a paragon of what a South African civil servant should be. Unyielding on his demands on government departments, agencies and especially our grossly errant municipalities, he laid clear benchmarks of accountability.
In his words, given at a SACC webinar this September, on the character and anatomy of corruption, AG Makwetu said: “The value of public money is measured on whether it reaches its intended destination of public service.” In his honour and memory, all South Africans and others in positions of responsibility for public finances, must ensure that this value is religiously observed. Public money must reach its intended destination.
We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and colleagues. May his family be comforted by the beauty of his service; and may his soul rest in eternal peace and rise in glory!
