Today as the country comes together to celebrate the life of liberation icon, Mrs Zondeni Veronica Sobukwe, at her memorial service, the South African Council of Churches extends sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Sobukwe family.
Mama Sobukwe who passed away at the age of 91 at her home in
Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape on 15 August 2018 will be remembered at as a
fierce human rights activist who stood against the apartheid
government. Affectionately known as ‘Mother of Azania’, her conviction
and activism against injustice led to her meeting her match in the late
Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) founder and her husband, Robert
Sobukwe. Her life embodied what it means to serve and sacrifice for the
greater good.
As we prepare to bid her a final farewell ahead of her category 2
Special Official Funeral which will be held in Graaff-Reinet on
Saturday, we salute her for her contribution to our history and being
one of many who paved the way to a democratic and just South Africa.
We add our voice in echoing the celebratory messages honoring the
life of a great women who lived amongst us, and may these honours carry
Mrs Sobukwe to her final resting place.
