SACC Statement on Financial Mail’s Distasteful Depiction of Public Protector

August 2, 2019

Media Release

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) notes with displeasure this week’s cover page of the Financial Mail, which presents the Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, as “Enemy of The State”, with images of snakes around her face. We find this characterization of the Public Protector distasteful and it seriously undermines the dignity of her Office.

“This politics of personal attacks is not right,” said SACC General Secretary, Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana.

“Whether you agree or disagree with her work, you have to respect the office of the Public Protector and accord it it’s dignity,” he added.

We call on South Africans to desist from the attacks on the person of Advocate Mkhwebane.
