Reverend Frank Chikane
Reverend Frank Chikane, was appointed General Secretary of the SACC in July 1987, replacing Dr Beyers Naudé, and played a critical role carrying the organisation through a period of fundamental change in the 1990s. He attempted to draw the more conservative churches back into the SACC and focused on changing the image of the SACC , ensuring that it played a meaningful role in mediation.
In 2007, five former security officials in South Africa’s apartheid regime received suspended prison sentences for plotting to kill Reverend Chikane by soaking his clothing in poison. Reverend Chikane said he did not want to see the men go to prison. Former Police minister, Adriaan Vlok, sought forgiveness from Reverend Chikane in 2006 by washing his feet as an act of seeking Christian forgiveness.
